Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz vie for the affection of a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) in Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest, The Favourite.
Weisz plays Lady Sarah, a confidant to the queen in early 18th century England.
Emma Stone plays Abigail, a newly appointed servant who quietly becomes friends with the Queen in the hopes of raising her status within the royal inner-circle.
The two become rivals as jealousy and treachery unfold.
The Favourite comes to us from highly regarded director Yorgos Lanthimos, who’s known for his disturbing, darkly comical films like The Lobster (2015), Dogtooth (2009) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).
Lanthimos’ films are edgy and blur the line between mainstream and avant-garde filmmaking.
The Favourite appears to follow in the same direction as his past work if the new trailer is anything to go by.
The film looks funny and twisted, and will almost certainly shock.
Furthermore, its peculiar cinematography only adds to the quirkiness of the story and themes, which is something else Lanthimos’ films are famous for.
Nicholas Hoult and Joe Alwyn join Olivia Colman, Weisz and Stone to round out the cast.
The film is due for release on 26 December 2018.
