Renowned director Guillermo del Toro’s latest, The Shape of Water gets its first trailer, bringing with it the fantasy elements the director is known for.
The Shape of Water is set amongst the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963, where a lonely mute woman Elisa (Sally Hawkins) and her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer), discover a classified experiment in the secret government laboratory they work at.
The so-called experiment appears to be some type of water-dwelling, human-fish hybrid creature, played here by del Toro’s regular collaborator, Doug Jones.
The trailer doesn’t give away too much, except we can see that the film will be about Elisa’s friendship with the creature, as the two appear to connect on a deeper level, being that they’re both different.
Somewhere along the way it seems as though the agency in charge of the creature will decide to destroy it, bringing about questions of ethics and morality, with some dramatic elements behind it all.
The style of this film reminded me a lot of del Toro’s most famous work, Pan’s Labyrinth (2006).
It definitely has a similar look and feel to that film, however one could say that all of the director’s work has that type of feel, and it would be fair to say so.
The Shape of Water features a great cast that includes the aforementioned Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer and Doug Jones, and they’re joined by the Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg and Richard Jenkins.
The film is due out on 8 December 2017, check out the first trailer and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
