Warner Bros has found a replacement for Ben Affleck, after he recently dropped out of directing the upcoming standalone Batman film for them.
The new director will be none other than Matt Reeves (pictured above), whose past credits include Cloverfield (2008), Let Me In (2010), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes.
I would have loved for Ben Affleck to stay on as director, but as far as replacements go, Reeves is an excellent choice.
He’s proven that he can handle a big budget action film, with his work on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes being a step up from the first film in that series, and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes, which also looks amazing (see the first trailer here).
The Apes films have quite a rich history in cinema as well as pop culture, but still nowhere near as much as the character of Batman does.
While there will certainly be pressure for Reeves to bring out a great product, he should do a good job as long as any scripting issues are resolved and everyone’s happy with the film.
Up to this point, it appears there have been several re-writes of the script, which is never a good sign, but we can still hope that the filmmakers will end up getting it right.
The Batman is tentatively scheduled for a 2019 release and we’ll post more news as it develops.
