Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum, the man who invented ‘show business’ in this upcoming musical by Australian director Michael Gracey.
The film focuses on Barnum’s development of a musical/circus show after losing his job; a spectacle unheard of in his time during the mid 1800’s.
The trailer lays down the foundation for the basic plot of the film, but aside from that it doesn’t reveal much else.
We do get a look at the tone the film’s going for, as well as its visual style and some sample music and dance choreography from the film.
It appears first-time director Michael Gracey has looked to fellow Aussie director Baz Luhrmann for some inspiration here, as the film definitely has taken some cues from Luhrmann’s past work.
Along with some awesome visuals, the film features songs from the Academy Award-winning lyricist from 2016’s La La Land (see my review here), which is a huge bonus.
Fans of musicals and Jackman should definitely get something out of this film judging by the first trailer, however the film also stars popular actor Zac Efron, along with the up-and-coming starlet Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson.
The Greatest Showman is due across cinemas on 26 December 2017.
