Dog lovers, check out the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose, a film that appears to be about the soul of a dog, living on from one life to the next.
The film is based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron and follows the story of a dog (voiced by Josh Gad), across many different incarnations in its existence, as he finds out the meaning of his purpose on this Earth through the humans he interacts with.
It seems like an overly complex and spiritual plot for a movie about dogs and their owners, but it also sounds rather unique.
Whether or not a dog gets reincarnated as another dog after they die is a question that I’m certain has never been asked before until now, let alone had a movie made about it.
Going by the trailer, the film looks like it will be a pretty sympathetic journey, with themes of friendship, loyalty, love and loss – a potential tearjerker.
The film also recently received backlash from animal cruelty organisations after a video surfaced showing one of the film’s canine stars filming in duress.
Modern film productions take extra special care when it comes to the welfare of animals in the films they’re starring in, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out – you can see the video I’m talking about here (please note, the footage may be distressing to some).
The film is directed by Lasse Hallström, who has a pretty impressive career, having directed films like Chocolat (2000), What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and The Cider House Rules (1999).
A Dog’s Purpose also stats Dennis Quaid, Britt Robertson and Peggy Lipton.
It hits cinemas on 6 April 2017 in Australia, check out the trailer below.
