The Netflix Original film will follow the formative years in the life of the ex-president, covering the course of his days at Columbia University.
The trailer gives us a look at what to expect from the film tone-wise, and while it does look intriguing, it’s fair to say there won’t be any shocking or controversial elements to it – basically the stuff that makes biopics good.
As with virtually all Netflix Original products, the production values in this film look excellent, and the filmmakers have hit the mark with the casting.
Australian actor Devon Terrell makes his feature film debut here and he absolutely nails the look and voice of the young Barry Obama.
Also starring is Ashley Judd, Jenna Elfman and the super-talented rising star Anya Taylor-Joy.
The film is directed by Vikram Gandhi and makes its debut exclusively on Netflix on 16 December 2016.
The official synopsis for the film is as follows:
A young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry,” arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates.Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.
