The highly anticipated video game adaptation of Sony’s smash hit Uncharted is around the corner, and its first trailer has arrived.
Based on the hugely popular Playstation video game series of the same name, Uncharted follows Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), an aspiring adventurer who travels the world searching for hidden treasures.
The film serves as a prequel to the video games and sees a younger Drake finding his way through the treasure hunting world and introduces him to his future mentor and partner, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg).
The trailer gives audiences a good look at the characters and plenty of action, with sequences pulled directly from the games, and the film’s humorous tone.
The Uncharted games are best known for their excellent stories, character development, sly humour and gorgeous exotic locations making the backdrops for some exciting action set pieces.
The film aims to capture all of the above, and we can see glimmers of it in this new trailer; however, the film doesn’t seem to grasp the game’s essence.
Fans of the games will know what I mean; watching the trailer for Uncharted didn’t give me the same sense of excitement compared to the feeling of watching an announcement or trailer for a new Uncharted game.
It could be that the characters are miscast, or perhaps the writing is missing that same level of engagement that the games deliver.
Nevertheless, the film looks like it ticks all the boxes required of an adventure film blockbuster and should make for an exciting big-screen movie-going experience.
Uncharted is due in cinemas from February 17.
