Based on the iconic DC Comics villain, Joker sees Joaquin Phoenix play a failed comedian with a chip on his shoulder turn psychotic.
The final trailer for Joker gives us a little bit more about the character study we can expect in the film while outlining the psychotic clown’s path to becoming one of pop culture’s most popular fictional villains.
There is a huge Taxi Driver (1976) slash The King of Comedy (1982) vibe to the film, both of which were directed by Martin Scorsese, the legendary director serving as a producer on this film.
Joker is not set in the extended DC universe that films like Aquaman (2018), Shazam! (2019) and Justice League (2017) belong to, and it shows.
Director Todd Phillips has created a new world to explore the origins of the Joker, and dare I say it, Phoenix’s rendition of the character could be the best yet.
Much like Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), which saw a grounded version of the titular character expertly portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, Phillips’ Joker looks to ground things even further with this gritty take on the character.
There’s also no sign of Joker’s nemesis Batman here, and rumour has it that he won’t appear at all.
The film co-stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham, Frances Conroy and Brian Tyree Henry and is due for release on 4 October 2019.
