Fans of the hit TV series Deadwood can rejoice with the word out of town being that the feature film based on the series is officially in production.

Back in 2016, we reported on a rumour that a script was in the works for a movie version of the HBO TV series Deadwood.

Here we are a full two years later and finally, Collider (per HBO) reports that the Deadwood movie is now in production.

HBO has also released a synopsis for the film, as follows:

In the “Deadwood” film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

Picking up ten years after the events of the third and final series of Deadwood, the film will see a lot of the show’s original cast reprising their roles.

One of TV’s greatest characters, Al Swearengen, played by Ian McShane will return, along with Timothy Olyphant’s Seth Bullock, Molly Parker’s Alma Ellsworth and John Hawkes’ Sol Star.

Paula Malcomson, Anna Gunn, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens and Gerald McRaney will also return.

For anyone that hasn’t seen Deadwood, it ran for three seasons between 2004 and 2006 and is widely regarded as some of HBO’s best original programming.

The show was a brutal, unflinching look at the lives of various opportunistic people living in the Wild-Western town of Deadwood, a place without any laws.

It featured some iconic characters that have been missed for over ten years, so fans should be pleased with the news of the upcoming film.

No release date has been announced as yet, however, it’s good to know that the show’s creator David Milch serves as the film’s writer with Daniel Minahan directing.

New (potential) fans, check out the trailer for the series below!
