From acclaimed author, Gillian Flynn and Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen comes the latest trailer for the upcoming heist-drama, Widows.
A group of widows step up to see the plans of their late husbands through.
Where to start with this one.
Firstly, the cast is incredible.
Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo make up the four widows, with a supporting cast that includes Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson.
It’s a powerhouse cast from a powerhouse director and screenwriter.
McQueen has produced a remarkable body of work in such a short career, and Widows follows up his Oscar-winning efforts on 12 Years a Slave (2013).
The director is known for his gritty style and edgy themes, and they look to have carried over in Widows, though it’s not obvious in this latest trailer.
The trailer conveys the film’s plot rather generically and opts to focus more on the tone and the dramatic elements.
It’s a plot that easily fits into mainstream cinema, with McQueen’s signature style all over it.
And McQueen’s style is not super-mainstream.
Rather, his work is of the challenging variety, and I’m certain the trailer is holding a lot back.
We’ll know soon enough, when the film hits theatres on 16 November 2018.
