The Favourite is the latest from director Yorgos Lanthimos and it looks like his offbeat style of filmmaking is as present as ever in this historical drama/dark comedy.
Set in the early 18th century, The Favourite sees a frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupying the throne while her friend and confidant, Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs in her stead.
A new servant by the name of Abigail (Emma Stone) enters the picture, whose political ambitions cause problems for Sarah.
Much like Lanthimos past films like The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), The Favourite looks like it will feature a heavy dose of twisted psychological humour and drama.
The director’s peculiar, disconcerting style is on full display here as well, which should have audiences squirming in their seats.
The first teaser doesn’t give much away plot-wise, but the visuals we do see give us a good look at the quirkiness on display, of which there is plenty.
The film stars Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, Mark Gatiss, Joe Alwyn and Nicholas Hoult.
The Favourite looks like a nice addition to Lanthimos’ body of work, that could potentially throw him into the mainstream.
Though, he’s at his best making these smaller, thought-provoking films.
The film is due out on 23 November 2018, check out the first teaser below.
