Top Gun 2 is in the works and I for one, am excited.
Kenny Loggins, shirtless volleyball and those flight suits are hopefully coming our way again!
Casting is underway, with the question being asked, who will play the awesomely named character ‘Riot’?
Riot is the son of Anthony Edwards’ character ‘Goose’ Bradshaw from the first film, the wingman to Maverick who died in the original Top Gun.
Officially titled Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise reprises his role as Maverick, now a flight instructor and mentor to a new generation of elite Navy pilots.
Directed by Tony Scott (True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995)), the 1986 original was a massive hit that launched Tom Cruise into the stratosphere of movie stardom.
It grossed $176 million at the domestic box office ($436 million if adjusted for inflation) and with Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy (2010), Oblivion (2013)) stepping up to direct, it’s shaping up to be a much-awaited sequel.
With the project officially underway, the casting process has ramped up.
A key role is that of ‘Riot Wrigley’, son of ‘Goose’ Bradshaw, who aims to become a fighter pilot like his deceased father, who winds up under the wing (zing!) of his father’s former wingman; Maverick.
Previously, online rumours for the character synopsis were described as:
Supporting Male (20-29) Goose’s son. All-American good looks. Rode a football scholarship to an Ivy League degree. He is in love with Sugar. He distrusts Maverick and dislikes what he stands for, although they have a lot of similarities. Eventually, comes to respect Maverick and uses his techniques. He is forced to eject in enemy territory and Maverick comes to save him.
Riot’s distrust of Maverick is obviously tied to the fact that Maverick was with Riot’s father when he died.
Goose’s death was a pivotal moment in the original, which almost drove Maverick to quit the Top Gun program altogether.
In order to overcome his guilt, Maverick continues to fly, ultimately ending the film as a success.
It will be interesting to see how the relationship between Maverick and Riot develops, as they are more similar than they care to admit.
So who out of Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult & Glen Powell will get the part?
It’s certainly a career-elevating role.
Hopefully, we will find out in the near future.
Top Gun: Maverick is due for release on 12 July 2019.
