Arguably the greatest science-fiction film of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey returns to select theatres across Australia to celebrate its 50th anniversary, in a special ‘unrestored’ 70mm format.
Warner Bros. Pictures will be debuting the new 70mm print for the first time on Saturday May 12 at this year’s 71st annual Cannes Film Festival, to be introduced by renowned director Christopher Nolan.
The unrestored print has been developed using new printing elements made from the original camera’s negative; a true photochemical film recreation.
Nolan, a big Stanley Kubrick fan himself, worked closely with the Warner Bros. team in helping to restore the print.
Originally released in the 70mm format back on April 3rd 1968, Kubrick’s masterpiece was well ahead of its time and went on to become one of the most influential sci-fi films ever made.
The film follows a group of astronauts and their artificial intelligence system known as ‘Hal’, as they traverse the universe in search of an ancient monolith of unknown origin, that may hold the secret to human evolution.
The journey is one full of harrowing poeticism, making for a visceral movie-watching experience like no other.
Warner Bros. will follow the cinematic re-release later in the year with a new release of 2001: A Space Odyssey on home theatre formats, for the first time in 4K resolution.
The film will hit select Australian cinemas for a limited run beginning on 24 May 2018, and will be screening at the following venues:
