Word out of Hollywood today is that the long-anticipated video-game adaptation of the treasure-hunting action series Uncharted has found its director.
Shawn Levy has been announced as the director for the upcoming Sony film, with the script to be penned by Joe Carnahan.
For those unaware of Levy’s work, he recently scored major love from fans for producing the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, but has several film directing credits to his name that include the Night at the Museum trilogy (2006-2014), The Internship (2013) and Real Steel (2011).
He’s definitely more of a comedy-film director when you look back at his credits, but it’s obvious he has the abilities to capture the magic of pure genre films/series, as can also be seen by his past work, but more specifically with Stranger Things, which payed a massive tribute to Spielberg-ian types of films from the 80’s.
Carnahan is set to write the upcoming Bad Boys film, Bad Boys for Life, but also has credits for writing the action films The A-Team (2010) and The Grey (2011).
It’s a good pairing when you look at the work they’ve done prior, and it seems like Uncharted will be leaning towards an action-comedy themed adventure film, which is essentially what the video games were all about.
For the non-gamers out there, the Uncharted game series is basically what the Indiana Jones films would have been if they were video games.
There’s no word of casting as yet, or a release date, however it’s still likely 2-3 years away, though we’ll post more news as it becomes available.
In the meantime check out a clip courtesy of IGN’s Youtube page which gives you a look at the type of humour that is featured in the game.
