The new film The Tax Collector is set on the violent streets of Los Angeles and sees popular actor Shia LaBeouf in a different type of role.
The Tax Collector follows the story of David Cuevas (Bobby Soto), a gangland figure whose job it is to go around collecting debts, or ‘tax’ as per the film’s title, with his psychotic partner Creeper (LaBeouf) by his side.
Cuevas is also a devoted family man and is forced to fight for and protect his family when an old gangland rival comes to town and threatens his existence.
This gritty crime film comes to us from director David Ayer, who’s made a career out of directing gritty crime films, the likes of End of Watch (2012), Sabotage (2014), and the popular fantasy-crime drama Bright for Netflix in 2017.
Mainstream fans may also recognize Ayer’s name as the director behind 2016’s divisive DC Comics film, Suicide Squad.
This is also Ayer’s second collaboration with LaBeouf after having worked with the actor on the 2014 war drama, Fury.
The duo seem to have a mutual respect for each other, with LaBeouf going extra-method for this role and Ayer only having kind words about the actor.
The Tax Collector looks like it will be a violent and tense crime drama with heart.
Shia LaBeouf extends his range as an actor further in this role and his character is without a doubt the standout here, and what is likely to draw audiences in.
The film is currently scheduled for release on 7 August 2020.
