Ryan Reynolds’ video-game character ‘Guy’ comes to life in the new comedy action-adventure film Free Guy from director Shawn Levy.
Guy (Reynolds) is an unassuming bank teller in an open-world video game that’s full of violence and destruction, who eventually decides to break the rules and play the game himself.
He’s what’s known as an NPC (non-playable character), which is a character in a game that resides in the background and isn’t used in any way to drive the narrative.
Usually, NPC’s can be beaten up and killed in these types of video-games (the Grand Theft Auto series is a good example), which is what’s happening to Guy on a daily basis.
He turns the tables on the game rules and kills a playable character, and after picking up a pair of digital glasses from the deceased party, realises he’s stuck in the game and uses it to his advantage to have a bit of fun.
Reynolds is a perfect fit for the quirky lead character, though he doesn’t appear to be stepping too far out of his comfort zone for this one which is a bit of a shame.
Nevertheless, the film looks like a lot of fun and is filled with comedy, action and stylised video-game-type violence.
It’s directed by Shawn Levy, whose past credits include Real Steel (2011) and the Night at the Museum (2006-14) films.
