‘Robocop’ Reboot in the Works with Neill Blomkamp Set to Direct

If you haven’t heard yet, Neill Blomkamp is directing an upcoming Robocop reboot tentatively titled Robocop Returns!

Anyone excited for this?

If it was any other director, I wouldn’t be, but I have faith in Blomkamp doing the famous franchise justice.

Blomkamp’s past works include District 9 (2009), Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015).

District 9 put the director on the map and was highly regarded by fans and critics.

Elysium and Chappie were critically panned for the most part, and unfairly if you ask me.

Justin Rhodes is rewriting a script from the original Robocop (1987) scribes, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner.

Rhodes recently also co-wrote the script for an upcoming Terminator reboot, which will be directed by Deadpool’s Tim Miller.

Despite what you think of Blomkamp’s past work, it’s fair to say the guy knows the dystopian/alien/robot film landscape pretty well, so who better than him to tackle this project?

The last attempt at a Robocop reboot ended up a disaster, with José Padilha’s 2014 film starring Joel Kinnaman failing to meet expectations.

The film suffered from a lack of imagination and missed all the elements that made the original Robocop so iconic.

It was, essentially, a family-friendly remake of the brutally violent original.

This news will likely have a lot of people up in arms about the fact that yet another reboot of the beloved franchise is in the works, however, it’s something that we, as film-lovers need to accept and move on with.

The Hollywood system will keep churning out remake after remake and reboot after reboot, and no amount of complaining will stop that.

I don’t see the harm in a reboot/remake of classic franchises, as long as the studios and filmmakers get them right!
