The first trailer for director Robert Rodriguez’ coming-of-age sci-fi/action film based on the Japanese Manga series, Alita: Battle Angel, has arrived.
The film follows the story of Alita – the humanoid cyborg girl played by Rosa Salazar, as she comes to terms with who she is, whilst discovering the meaning of love and trying to survive in a world where she is hunted down by what appears to be, more cyborg humanoid villains.
The first trailer for the film only reveals the bare-bones plot for the film, while giving us a good look at its visual style, which is impressive in an odd type of way.
Right off you’ll notice Alita’s massive eyes, which is an obvious nod to the art-style found in almost all Japanese Manga properties.
While that look does work in my opinion, it might be enough to pull some viewers out of the film.
However the CGI effects overall tend to fall on the more cartoonish side of things, which could be a deal-breaker to those unaffected by Alita’s unique look.
Despite the quirks in the visuals, the film appears to tell a relatable story that could have some depth to it.
And of course we get a glimpse of the film’s action, of which it appears there will be plenty of.
Joining Salazar is an elite supporting cast that includes multiple Academy Award winners such as Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali.
The always versatile Jackie Earle Haley and Ed Skrein also star, along with young newcomer Keean Johnson.
The film also appears to have some thematic parallels to this year’s Ghost in the Shell, which was somewhat of a flop.
Let’s hope fan-favourite director Robert Rodriguez can deliver the goods with Alita: Battle Angel instead, to make up for the mistakes Ghost made.
The film is also produced by James Cameron, which is a good sign.
It hits cinemas on 19 July in Australia, check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
