Roald Dahl Novel ‘The Witches’ Gets a Fun Modern Adaptation

Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer star in the new adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl children’s novel, The Witches.

Set in 1967, The Witches tells the story of a young, orphaned boy (Jahzir Bruno) who goes to live with his grandmother (Octavia Spencer) after the death of his parents.

The pair encounter some witches and quickly escape to a luxurious seaside resort, where Bruno can keep safe.

They soon discover, however, that the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) and her large entourage of witches are also staying at the same resort.

Shenanigans ensue after the Grand High Witch turns the boy and his friends into mice, in a plot to have the resort’s staff exterminate them (witches hate little children).

The book of the same name from Roald Dahl was made into a popular kids movie in 1990 starring Angelica Houston in the lead as the Grand High Witch, which was faithful to Dahl’s book and featured some gruesome practical effects.

This new adaptation from acclaimed director Robert Zemeckis feels like a worthy adaptation of the source material and remake of the 1990 film, if not somewhat more viewer-friendly compared to the 90s version.

Zemeckis appears to have captured the essence of Dahl’s book and with its colorful production design and cast of characters, The Witches 2020 looks like a fun film that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock also star, and the film will arrive to streaming platform HBO Max, first and exclusively, on 22 October 2020.
