Alita: Battle Angel is the new hybrid CGI-cross-live-action sci-fi film from producers James Cameron and Jon Landau, directed by Robert Rodriguez.
Based on the 90’s manga series Battle Angel Alita from Yukito Kishiro, the film follows Alita (Rosa Salazar), a powerful humanoid cyborg from a bygone era who sets out to discover the truth about her mysterious past, leading her on a dangerous, action-filled journey of self-discovery.
This new trailer reveals a fair bit of the film’s plot, with a look at some of the impressive visuals and set pieces.
The film’s first trailer back in December of 2017 depicted the character of Alita as somewhat creepy looking with her enormous eyes, though it seems less creepy in this new trailer.
It looks like the filmmakers may have even toned down that element of her look while improving the overall textures of the character in the 7 months since that trailer.
Needless to say, the visual effects in this film look awesome.
It seems as though they’re not going for ultra-realism, but close enough to it.
More importantly, the film looks like a lot of fun and considering you have the producers of Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009) behind the scenes on this one, then we should at the very least expect an entertaining spectacle film.
There were some elements from the story that resembled that of the Ghost in the Shell manga (as well as its movie adaptation), though the themes about cyborgs trying to discover their true selves are fairly universal.
Alongside Rosa Salazar is the always entertaining Christoph Waltz, with Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.
A great cast and crew along with a cool sci-fi premise and spectacular effects make Alita: Battle Angel one to look out for when it hits cinemas on 21 December 2018.
