Rising stars Maika Monroe and Ed Skrein star in the Netflix sci-fi thriller film TAU, which features a murderous artificial intelligence.
Monroe plays Julia, a kidnapping victim that wakes up in a futuristic house of horrors, where she’s forced to partake in a sadistic experiment enforced by her captor, Alex (Skrein).
Her only chance at escape is to outsmart the deadly artificial intelligence system called Tau (Gary Oldman).
It’s not the most original premise, but it does make for a stylish looking thriller, as we can see in the trailer.
The TAU trailer reminded me of the 1997 film Cube, which saw 6 strangers wake up in a cube-like maze filled with deadly booby traps.
TAU is similar in that its lead character, and others, appear to be trapped in a similar, claustrophobic structure, however, in this instance, the booby traps are being controlled by the psychotic A.I. and its creator.
Monroe broke out on the scene in the awesome indy thriller The Guest (2014), followed shortly by the highly regarded indy horror It Follows (2014).
She’s kept very busy since then but has yet to break out into the mainstream, though it can only help to nab the lead in a Netflix Original film.
Likewise, Ed Skrein has been slowly coming up in Hollywood after appearing in the outstanding Ill Manors (2012) and Deadpool (2016).
TAU looks like a good stepping stone for the further exposure of both Maika Monroe and Ed Skrein, and starring alongside Gary Oldman is a bonus as well.
The intriguing sci-fi thriller TAU is directed by Federico D’Alessandro and releases on Netflix on 29 June 2018.
