Check out the trailer for the new Japanese anime Miss Hokusai, a beautifully animated homage to the artist Katsushika Hokusai, set in Edo era Japan.
The film’s lead character is the daughter of the famous artist, known for his classic artworks including The Great Wave off Kanagawa (see below), which is one of the most well known pieces of art to come out of Japan.
The film is a biographical tale that revolves around the lives of the artist and his daughter, told from her perspective.
Judging by the trailer it looks like it could be a touching tribute to the famous artist, filled with drama but more importantly, beautiful art direction and animation.
This type of Japanese animation has become deeply rooted not only in the country’s own culture, but is also beloved in Western society and around the globe.
One thing a lot of animated films that come out of Japan have in common is that the stories have a lot of heart beneath the surface, and this film looks to be no exception.
Miss Hokusai will be premiering on October 15 in Australia as part of the Japanese Film Festival.
IMDB Synopsis:
The life and works of Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai, as seen from the eyes of his daughter, Katsushika O-Ei.
