Depp will be playing Los Angeles police detective Russell Poole, who was tasked to investigate the murders of the two superstar rappers.
The film will be based on the 2002 book LAbyrinth by Randall Sullivan, who followed Poole around to investigate a cop-on-cop shooting, that was linked back to Suge Knight’s gangsta rap label, Death Row Records.
Upon further investigation, Poole finds evidence of police officers tied to the notorious record label and its leader, as well the Bloods street gang, which potentially also tie them to the murders of Biggie and Tupac.
There was a documentary called Biggie & Tupac that came out in 2002 which covers some of the above as well as the broader history of the feud between the two rappers, which I highly recommend for anyone that hasn’t seen it.
The murders of the two groundbreaking rap stars still remain unsolved, with countless guesses as to the parties involved in their demise, with Suge Knight, founder of Death Row Records being suggested as one of the main players in their deaths.
I’m hoping this is a return to form for Johnny Depp, who had a remarkable career coming up in Hollywood, but has been on a bit of a downward spiral with his choice of roles in the last few years.
His early work has cemented his legacy as one of the great actors, however we need to see more of that greatness moving forward in his career, and this film could potentially set him back on the right path.
If nothing else, the story has the potential to make for some thrilling entertainment, with Brad Furman, director of The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner and the recent film The Infiltrator on board to direct.
