The old Ritchie being the pre-Hollywood Ritchie aka the Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000) Ritchie.
The above two films are the director’s best, so it’s great to see him come back with what looks like an unofficial third entry in an unofficial trilogy of quirky crime capers in Ritchie’s signature style.
This is great news for fans who haven’t been too impressed with his Hollywood work, with films including Sherlock Holmes (2009), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) and Aladdin (2019).
I enjoyed all of the above films (ok, Aladdin was so-so), though the pure British crime-comedy film is where the director is at his best without a doubt.
Matthew McConaughey leads the cast of The Gentlemen where he plays an American expat who’s built a highly profitable marijuana business in London.
When word gets out that he may be wanting to sell off his empire, the hounds come out, ready to steal, bribe and blackmail their way to take the business from under him.
The trailer for this film has the classic Ritchie vibe written all over it and it features plenty of criminal hijinx and humour which should please a lot of fans.
It features an outstanding cast that alongside McConaughey includes Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant.
Check out The Gentlemen in cinemas from 24 January 2020.
