Ian McKellen plays a career conman who gets more than he bargained for when trying to swindle his latest subject in The Good Liar.
Con artist Roy Courtnay (McKellen) meets the well-off Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) over the internet and begins to court her, with the aim to cheat Betty out of her fortune.
Roy’s devious ways begin to come undone once he starts to care for her, and the secrets and lies he’s been harbouring start to take a dangerous turn.
There’s much to absorb in the trailer for The Good Liar and it will leave you none the wiser as to what the finer plot details of the film are.
It gives away just enough to build some intrigue while cleverly steering clear of revealing any plot twists.
The conman trope is one that’s been popular in Hollywood cinema for decades now, so it will be interesting to see what The Good Liar can bring to the table.
The film is directed by Bill Condon, whose past credits include 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and 2015’s Mr Holmes.
Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren look to be in top form here, which is expected by now from these two veteran actors (though lets just forget Mirren’s turn in 2018’s Winchester ever took place for now).
The film is due to hit cinemas on 15 November 2019.
