One of the MCU’s more anticipated entries features some lesser-known characters, who are essentially gods, known as the Eternals.
The first teaser for the film takes audiences back thousands of years and sees the arrivals of the Eternals in what looks like a monolith-type spacecraft straight from the mind of Stanley Kubrick.
From there, we’re transported through time and see these ‘eternal’ beings help human civilization build to what it has become today, without ever having to step in, until now.
The ‘until now’ part of the teaser remains a mystery as we’re not shown who the film’s villain is, though the post-Endgame Avengers team is referenced, so it’s likely to be the new future big bad of the MCU.
Not much else is known about the Eternals characters outside of the Marvel fandom, and casual fans are made none the wiser in this trailer.
We know that they’re immortal beings, like gods walking the Earth, but that’s about it.
The Eternals team is played by an amazingly diverse cast, including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, and Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Gil Birmingham, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.
Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao directs the film, and her washed-out visual style (featured in 2020’s Nomadland) is ever-present in this film.
The style is a departure from what we’re used to with the generally super-polished look of past Marvel films; however, it also feels like a nice change of pace.
Let’s hope it won’t be too long before we can see a full trailer with some more story details!
Eternals is due to hit theatres on 4 November 2021.
