Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) is out to solve mysteries while cracking jokes and battling Pokémon in the upcoming Detective Pikachu film.

When the private eye Harry Goodman goes missing, his former partner Pikachu goes on the case to unravel the mystery behind his disappearance, enlisting Goodman’s 21-year-old son Tim (Justice Smith) to help.

As the two go on to crack the case, they’ll encounter various other Pokémon characters in their world and, expectedly, do battle along the way.

This is the first live-action film based on the worldwide Pokémon phenomena and judging by this (and the first) trailer, fans around the world can expect an action-packed all-age adventure.

The film looks hilarious, with plenty of wit in its dialogue, as well as some amazing, colourful visuals and cute, furry characters.

Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu and feels like a good fit for the character based on the script dialogue; Reynolds channelling his natural charisma and sly humour for the role.

Young actor Justice Smith, whose last appearance was in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), leads the human cast of the film.

Reynolds and Smith are joined by co-stars Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy.

The film is directed by Rob Letterman, whose past credits include Goosebumps (2015), Gulliver’s Travels (2010) and Shark Tale (2004).

‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu’ hits theatres on 9 May 2019.
