Rising star Timothée Chalamet leads an all-star cast in David Michôd’s The King for Netflix, a historical drama about King Henry V.

Chalamet plays Hal, the newly crowned King of England (Henry V), who is reluctantly forced to embrace his newfound power and way of life amongst a cohort of confidants that can’t be trusted.

The official teaser sets up the dramatic tone of the film with a look at all of the principal players that include the likes of Joel Edgerton, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson, Sean Harris and Ben Mendelsohn.

Edgerton also takes writing credit for the script alongside David Michôd, whose previous film, War Machine (2017), was also a Netflix exclusive.

I found War Machine to be a bit drab, however, Michôd’s first two films, Animal Kingdom (2010) and The Rover (2014) were outstanding.

There’s certainly a running theme about loyalty amongst a dysfunctional family within The King, which ties back to the themes in Animal Kingdom.

That’s a promising sign as that film has been Michôd’s best work to date.

Chalamet, who recently broke out in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name and went on to star in films like Lady Bird (2017) and Beautiful Boy (2018) looks to keep making a name for himself with this role, and is in excellent company with that whos-who of supporting talent.

The King is due for release on Netflix on 1 November 2019.
