French horror movie director Alexandre Aja’s latest sci-fi thriller, Oxygen, will have you feeling all sorts of claustrophobic.
Mélanie Laurent plays a woman who wakes up trapped in a high-tech cryogenic chamber with no memory of how she got there.
Her only contact is what appears to be an AI running the chamber she’s stuck in, and she’ll have to recount her memories and figure out a way to escape before running out of air.
Think 2010’s Buried with Ryan Reynolds but replace Reynolds with Laurent and add a sci-fi twist, and you have Oxygen.
That’s simplifying things, of course, as Alexandre Aja’s latest looks to have a lot of depth but features some common themes with the film above, namely waking up trapped in a small box.
You feel claustrophobic in the early parts of the trailer, but there’s a sense of relief once the character’s world opens up through her memories.
Not much else is revealed in the trailer to keep the plot a mystery, which is the best way to go into a film like this.
Aja’s made a career out of directing thriller films, past works including Crawl (2019), The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016), and Horns (2013), and looks to enhance his craft with this suspenseful thriller.
Check out Oxygen on Netflix from 12 May 2021.
