Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin and writer Taylor Sheridan return for the follow-up to the highly acclaimed 2015 cartel crime thriller Sicario, in the new trailer for Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
While many of the same cast and crew have returned, it is not a direct continuation from the plot of the first film, but remains set in the same world focusing on the ongoing war between the CIA and the Mexican drug cartels.
After discovering that drug cartels are now smuggling terrorists across the US-Mexico border, the CIA’s Matt Graver re-teams with former undercover operative Alejandro to eliminate the problem.
Josh Brolin reprises his role as federal agent Matt Graver and has a new superior at the CIA played by Catherine Keener.
Benicio Del Toro, who received a BAFTA nomination for his role in the original film, returns as violent gun-for-hire Alejandro Gillick along with Jeffery Donovan as DEA agent Steve Forsing.
Stefano Sollima takes over the directing duties from Denis Villeneuve, who was otherwise occupied with Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
Sollima is a worthy replacement given his extensive experience with this genre after directing 10 episodes of the Italian mafia television hit, Gomorrah, and gangster film Suburra (2015).
Critically acclaimed writer/director Taylor Sheridan resumes his role as scriptwriter and judging from the trailer, the sequel retains the same gritty feel and moral ambiguity portrayed in the original.
For the non-Spanish speaking population – Sicario translates as “hitman” with the term most frequently used to describe the hitmen associated with the Mexican drug cartels.
Soldado is the Spanish word for “soldier”, and the film again mixes English and Spanish to add to the authentic feel and fit with the current trend popularised by the TV series Narcos.
Josh Brolin has described Sicario: Day of the Soldado as a ‘more severe and bigger film’ than the first, but audiences will have to wait until it is released in cinemas on 29 June to see if they agree.
