Featuring an outstanding cast and directed by Drew Goddard, the first trailer for Bad Times at the El Royale looks to deliver the goods.
Seven strangers meet at the El Royale, a run-down hotel in 1960’s Lake Tahoe, where a murderous night sends each of the strangers, who are all harbouring a secret, down the path of redemption before all hell breaks loose.
The film’s first trailer sets the tone for the film, one that carries a retro, noir-ish vibe.
It’s clearly a thriller, but one that doesn’t take itself too seriously, much like Drew Goddard’s breakout horror film The Cabin in the Woods (2012).
Fans of that film should be able to see the overlap in style between the two, which is a bonus for sure, as Cabin managed to hit all the marks that make for an entertaining horror-comedy film, with a great twist ending, that I’m sure we’ll see more of here.
Chris Hemsworth reunites with Goddard on this film, and he’s joined by a talented cast that includes Lewis Pullman, Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Cailee Spaeny, Dakota Johnson and Jon Hamm.
The film’s style is reminiscent of the works of the Coen Brothers, whose works are renowned for their irreverent stories and plot twists.
Bad Times at the El Royale looks like it will be a stylistic addition to films of that nature, releasing in theatres on 5 October 2018.
