Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer play the unlikeliest of superheroes in the new Netflix action-comedy, Thunder Force.
McCarthy plays Lydia, a seemingly average woman and the estranged best friend of Spencer’s Emily, a scientist who’s discovered a treatment to give ordinary people superpowers.
After Lydia accidentally injects herself with the treatment and obtains super-strength, the pair unintentionally become the superhero team, Thunder Force, and make it their duty to fight crime.
The film is directed by Melissa McCarthy’s real-life partner Ben Falcone, with this being their fourth collaboration following Tammy (2014), The Boss (2016), Life of the Party (2018), and Superintelligence (2020).
We can see from the trailer that Falcone and McCarthy’s brand of humour is back or their fifth movie together and should please fans of those earlier films.
Thunder Force looks like a decent, fun time and should be enjoyable enough for some lighthearted viewing.
The filmmakers don’t seem to be attempting to bring anything new to the action-comedy sub-genre or even the superhero film genre. Still, with its likeable stars and streaming accessibility, the film should prove popular.
McCarthy and Octavia Spencer are both standout actresses, and it’s nice to see them in a movie together for the first time.
Thunder Force also features an outstanding comedic supporting cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Pom Klementieff, Kevin Dunn, Melissa Leo, and Jason Bateman.
Add it to your Netflix queue here before the film drops on 9 April 2021.
