Trailer for Oscar-Winner Sam Mendes’ New WWI Epic – ‘1917’

The award-winning director of Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), Sam Mendes, returns with his latest film, 1917 – a dramatic-looking war film set during World War 1.

Mendes has been quiet for the last few years since Spectre, and now we understand why.

He’s been working on the beautifully-shot war epic, 1917.

There’s no official plot for the film as yet, however, we can see in the trailer that it follows two soldiers on a mission to pass on some life-saving news, through the dangerous landscape of WWI.

The soldiers in question are played by Captain Fantastic’s (2016) George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman (aka Tommen from TV’s Game of Thrones).

The film also features some big names that include Mark Strong, Richard Madden, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Another thing of note is the gorgeous cinematography in the film, which comes as no surprise considering Roger Deakins is behind it.

War movies are another sub-genre of film that come with what feels like an endless supply, so it’s always interesting to see how (or if) a director can push the boundaries in any way, or offer a unique take on the subject without succumbing to using common tropes.

Nolan did it with Dunkirk (2017) and Mel Gibson put in an excellent effort with Hacksaw Ridge (2016), so with Mendes at the helm, it looks like 1917 could deliver the goods for fans.

The film is due out on 25 December 2019 in the USA, while other territories will receive it in 2020.
