Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) have released a cool four-minute VFX reel for the hugely popular film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The video gives us a breakdown on how some of the effects were created in the film and it’s very impressive.
A subsidiary of LucasFilm, ILM was founded in 1975 by George Lucas and have gone on to do the effects for all the Star Wars films, as well as other blockbusters that include Captain America: Civil War, Jurassic World and the Transformers films amongst many others.
The company is renowned for their excellent visual effects work and you can see in this video just how great their work is.
The Force Awakens blends lots of practical effects with computer animation that is virtually seamless, making the worlds they create come alive.
The original Star Wars trilogy focused heavily on practical effects due to the lack of technology back in the days when they were first released, in comparison to the prequel Star Wars trilogy, which was panned for its overuse of visual effects, making the films look tacky and cartoon-like.
The fact of the matter is that even the prequel trilogy of films used a large portion of practical effects, however the integration of visual effects just wasn’t as seamless as they should have been.
Thankfully ILM nailed it for The Force Awakens, which went on to become one of last year’s highest grossing films at the box office and was applauded by fans and critics alike.
