Popular TV actress Sarah Paulson will play the infamous Nurse Ratched in the upcoming Netflix series, Ratched, from executive producer Ryan Murphy.
The character is in reference to the iconic murderous nurse, Mildred Ratched, from the popular 1962 Ken Kesey book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which was later adapted to film by Miloš Forman and starring Jack Nicholson, which went on to win 5 Oscars.
Nurse Ratched serving as the book and film’s villainous head mistress of a mental institution where the story takes place.
The upcoming Netflix TV series will be an origin story set in 1947 that charts the character’s journey through the mental health care system, starting off as a nurse and eventually becoming the iconic pop-culture villain.
Paulson and Murphy are regular collaborators, with the pair having worked together on several seasons of American Horror Story.
Much like that show, and Murphy’s most recent Netflix outing, Hollywood, Ratched is highly stylized, featuring production design that really pops, with a super-cool soundtrack to complement the visuals.
Murphy’s new psychological drama features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Finn Wittrock, Alice Englert, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo, and Vincent D’Onofrio.
It arrives on Netflix on 18 September 2020.
