If you’ve seen the movie then you know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, then please do so already because there are spoilers ahead.
ABC News in America recently posted a video showcasing the effects used to bring back Grand Moff Tarkin and a young Princess Leia in the recent film Rogue One, which is based in the Star Wars universe and set between the events of Episode 3 and 4.
The decision to bring these characters back via the use of computer effects has split audiences, both for moral reasons as well as the fact that the effects are just a little too obvious, and may pull some viewers out of the film.
Tarkin was played by Peter Cushing, who passed away in 1994 and Princess Leia was played by Carrie Fisher, who passed away just recently (she did of course give consent to the filmmakers to use her likeness before her death, along with Cushing’s estate).
The ABC News team visit the Industrial Light and Magic offices and speak to some of the visual effects big-wigs there to give audiences an insight into the process involved in resurrecting these characters for the movie, and it’s impressive to say the least.
ILM was created by George Lucas back in 1975 and has had a massive amount of success over the years in producing high quality visual effects work for a broad range of films.
Their work is generally amazing, however in my initial viewing of the film, the effects work on these old characters really took me out of the film.
It wasn’t because the effects was bad, but more-so that it was just a bit too obvious for my liking.
However, during the second viewing of the film I was able to better accept the effect the filmmakers were going for and just roll with it, making for a more enjoyable experience overall.
I did love the film in both cases though, so there really isn’t much to complain about (see my review here).
