So far Emile Hirsch has failed to live up to expectations after what many believed was a career-defining performance in 2007’s Into the Wild, though Freaks might change that.
Hirsch is not only set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s much anticipated Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019) but has also scored the lead in the critically praised sci-fi thriller Freaks.
Directed and written by duo Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, the men responsible for the forthcoming Kim Possible (2019) movie, Freaks stars Hirsch as a paranoid father who keeps his young daughter locked inside their home to protect her from the evils of the world.
At first, the trailer makes Hirsch look like a crazed father trying to shelter his daughter (newcomer Lexy Kolker) from a normal life, but things take on a decisive sci-fi edge as a voice-over states “Any freaks who are running loose are illegal,” as gunfights and strange occurrences play out on screen.
One review from Gizmodo claims Freaks is like an “Independent X-Men Movie,” which has me sold.
Also on board is veteran actor Bruce Dern as an ice-cream truck vendor with sinister intentions, along with Silicon Valley’s Amanda Crew and Hawaii Five-O’s Grace Park in unidentified roles.
Freaks is due for release on 23 August 2019.
