Gotta Catch the New Trailer for ‘Pokémon: Detective Pikachu’

Detective Pikachu movie trailer

The long-awaited trailer for the first live-action Pokémon film Detective Pikachu has dropped overnight.

Based on the successful Japanese anime and video game series, Detective Pikachu looks to be part comedy and part noir mystery and stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the titular character.

The film follows the adventures of a young boy that works together with a Pikachu in order to solve mysteries.

The trailer is filled with Pokémon galore with the fuzzy look and feel resembling what Winnie the Pooh and friends looked like in the recently released Christopher Robin film.

The tone of the film is surprisingly dark and funny (an interrogation scene featuring a Mr. Mime is a standout) which is a great fit for the Deadpool (2016) star’s voicework.

Detective Pikachu is directed by Rob Letterman, who is no stranger to live action retellings of contemporary material having directed 2010’s Gulliver’s Travels and 2015’s Goosebumps.

In addition to Reynolds, the film stars Justice Smith (recently seen in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Ken Watanabe and Rita Ora.

Detective Pikachu will find his way into cinemas on 16 June 2019.
